While hormone changes in youth may result in a lot of acne, eventually the hormones balance out and acne disappears. Unfortunately for some, acne scars may remain after your acne has cleared. If you have acne scars on your face, then you may seek treatment to help remove scars and reduce visibility.

Medical professionals have multiple treatment options for acne scars. Learn about some of your options and ways to minimize the look of scars or remove the scars completely. Once you know about the methods, you can consult with a doctor and go over the best options for you.

Microneedling

Scars, wrinkles, and other lines in the skin naturally heal with the presence of collagen. In some cases, doctors can perform procedures to help your body generate natural collagen that will restore skin and heal acne scars. This process is known as microneedling. Through a single-day appointment, a doctor can perform a microneedling treatment to your face.

Microneedling involves a tool with tiny sharp needles. The needles graze over the skin and create tiny punctures that are not visible to the eye and almost completely painless during the process. In the days that follow the treatment, your skin may redden as the healing process begins. Your face will generate collagen to heal the skin and reduce the visibility of scars.

A few weeks after the treatment, you should notice how the appearance of the scars has changed. From there, you could proceed with an additional treatment or use a skin care routine to keep the skin fresh and healthy. Ideally, you want to protect your skin from excessive sun exposure that could darken visible scars and reduce the effects of the treatment.

Botox

Botox treatments help smooth out skin and remove wrinkles. The same process also works to help reduce the appearance of acne scars. Doctors can inject the skin with Botox right around areas where acne scars are located. Botox injections are given through a standard needle and typically feel no different than any type of shot or vaccination.

In most cases, you will notice Botox results within a week. The Botox helps relax the skin around the scar and create a more even appearance. Botox does wear off over time so you may need annual appointments to treat areas and help reduce the visibility of the scars.

Derma Filler Injections

Other than Botox, another form of face injection is a derma filler injection. The injection includes hyaluronic acid, which the body naturally produces. The acid helps skin look younger and more vibrant, including skin that has acne scars.

Ideally, you want the injections around the whole face to offer an even look. If you only treat one part of your face, then the difference is noticeable. Not only will it help reduce acne scars, but it will remove wrinkles, forehead lines, and other facial blemishes. Your skin will feel smoother to the touch and grooves caused by acne scars will smooth away.

The injections work rather quickly and the treatment lasts for a few months. Follow a regular schedule of injections for the greatest benefits. Doctors will see the results of the initial injection, schedule follow-ups, and then plan future treatments based on how your skin reacts.

Chemical Peels

One of the regular treatments you may seek for acne scars is a chemical peel. A chemical peel uses acids on the surface level of the skin to help heal the skin, remove toxins, and give you a natural and smooth look. Chemical peels are also an option if your face is still prone to acne. The peel will help prevent the breakout of additional acne and the formation of new scars.

Everyone’s face is different, so a face consultation is typically set up before the chemical peel. The evaluation includes an analysis of your face and multiple questions about dry or oily skin. From there, a doctor can select the best chemical peel to use. A chemical peel is not typically a one-time thing.

When you set up regular appointments for a chemical peel, you can help treat your face and reduce the look of the scars with each treatment. A doctor will recommend how often you should return for future peels. The peel process includes an application process and then an exfoliation process to remove dead skin cells and clear up the face. You can take pictures in the same light and location to monitor the results.

A full evaluation will help you select the best treatment option for acne scars. In some cases, a doctor may recommend multiple treatments at the same time.
